Pluto’s Time Has (Almost) Come

It will be a disappointing moment for me personally but the International Astronomical Union (IAU) will voting very shortly on the fate of the planet Pluto.

As discussed in a previous entry, Pluto planetary status has been in jeopardy since a new object, larger than Pluto was discovered in the Kuiper belt almost two years ago.

Despite prior news that a new 12-planet solar system was being considered the IAU has since backed down on those proposals, bowing to pressure from outside groups.

Instead they are proposing the demotion of Pluto to a new status of dwarf planet. A category that would see it placed with, at present, a few other objects in our solar system such as the recently discovered large body in the belt and maybe the asteroid Ceres.

The vote is happening right now, as I type and result should be announced by the end of the day. Could it be goodbye to the planet Pluto after 76 years? Its sad for me to say it, but I think so.
