Glad to hear you made it back OK!

Advice above about acclimatizing sounds good to me. Part of the whole MK experience is learning how your body reacts to altitude and how it best gets used to it. I'd suggest 48 hours at HP next time and a loud raspberry to anyone at STFC who complains about the extra HP bill.

Thanks Chris. Yes, I have not written off another visit. In fact I have been told the names of various drugs you can take to help with altitude sickness before you go. An asthma attack, eh? That must have been quite frightening. Glad to know you got back up without any further trouble.

I suffered some breathing problems after a couple nights at the CSO. I ended up having an asthma attack at altitude which was definitely a weird experience, although the CSO asked that I not head back up the mountain that trip. I had no other troubles at altitude on two other trips to observe at the CSO and the SMA, so it seems like mostly a random thing. Unfortunately I had to figure out how to get my rental car back down from HP, which took a few days until a collaborator drove it down to me.

Anyway, plan on more time at HP next trip, and try to get lots of sleep and food, and know you're not the first astronomer to have a trip cut short up there.
