Tonight: The Moon passes about 20° north of the star Mira in Cetus the Whale. Mira is a variable star. It changes brightness over a period of 332 days. Mira is now nearing its peak brightness. Latest reports list Mira”s brightness at 4th magnitude, a dim star but easily visible with the unaided eye. When Mira is near the dim part of its cycle, a telescope is needed to see the star. Compare Mira”s brightness with other nearby stars in the faint constellation of Cetus.
