Night Sky Note for March 20, 2008

Posted on 20 March 2008 · 329 views · 141 words.

Tonight: The Sun crosses the celestial equator at 1:48 a.m EDT. This instant is known as the Vernal Equinox. Spring begins at this time for the northern hemisphere. Look for the Sun to rise due east and set due west. Daylight and darkness are approximately equal. The Sun is at the intersection of the celestial equator and the ecliptic. This intersection point is known at the First Point in Aries. Due to the Earth”s slow 26,000 year precession, the First Point in Aries is no longer in Aries. It”s in Pisces. In a few hundred years the First Point will have moved into Aquarius. So our time in history could be called the dawning of the Age of Aquarius.

I am studying for my PhD in Astronomy at Cardiff University in the UK. Star formation is my main area of research but really I like anything to do with space, science and the internet.
