LHC Countdown

Posted on 10 September 2008 · 921 views · 160 words.

Protons in 14,000,000,000,000 electron volt collisions

600,000,000 times a second

after travelling 26,659 metres

at 11,245 times a second.

10,080 tonnes of liquid nitrogen cooling

9,300 magnets

controlling collisions at 99.99% the speed of light.

All taking place at -271.3°C

and 10-13 atmospheres.

It all turns on today with hopes of unravelling the mysteries of spacetime (and not spacetime itself as Radio 2 would have you believe - but as Brian Cox would say, they are “twats”).
